Dignity, respect and safer services: Victoria’s disability abuse prevention strategy

The Victorian Government has introduced a disability abuse prevention strategy which includes a code of conduct for disability service workers.

The strategy is based on a zero tolerance approach to abuse and provides a guide for individuals, service providers and the disability services sector to understand, promote and enhance safeguards and prevent abuse. A key focus of the strategy is to build the capacity of people with disability to assert their rights and act in their own interest.

An accompanying code of conduct for disability service workers covers:

  • a zero tolerance of abuse of people with disability
  • the behaviour expected of disability service workers
  • obligations of disability service provider organisations
